The largest city in the interior of Alaska, Fairbanks was founded as a part of the Alaskan and Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city is a commercial center for the state and is also a convenient jump-off point for Alaskan wilderness adventures, as it is located along both the Chena and Tanana rivers and the Dalton Highway, which runs through the state to the Arctic Ocean. Outdoor activities are abundant, with hiking, fishing, hunting, kayaking and canoeing areas nearby. Spectacular mountain and wilderness scenery surrounds the city, and Fairbanks is the largest city close to Mt. McKinley, the highest point in North America.
