Welcome to Soldotna, AK!
Sitting out on the Kenai Peninsula, approximately 150 mi (241 km) south of Anchorage, the city of Soldotna is quite the catch. A world class fishing destination situated along the Kenai River, it has come to be known as home of the world's largest king salmon—a reputation that was earned in 1985 when Les Anderson managed to snag a 97lb 4oz (44.11 kg) chinook salmon. Famous for this sort of world class fishing and some fabulous accommodations, tourism is currently the city's mainstay economy. As such, there's plenty for the avid outdoors person to do, such as wildlife viewing, airplane tours, horseback riding, canoe and hiking trips and, of course, fishing. In fact, fishing is so popular that most local taxidermy businesses will stuff and mount a salmon for free if it is over 70 lb (32 kg). Within the city there are a variety of shopping and dining possibilities and along the banks of the Kenai, there is even a 3,700-ft (1128-m) elevated fishing boardwalk.Hotels & Motels
